Joe in Chelsea

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

There’s a new spot for my son and I to add to our list of favorites, giving us some (maybe too many options) on our gallery visit days.

Joe just opened up a Chelsea location. The same great espresso (wonderful taste with lots of TLC)that you can find at their Village, NYU and SoHo locations. And this cafe offers a new and welcomed vibe. Fresh and modern atmosphere; offering table seating, sofa/hair salon seating and window-side people watching seating.

As long as Joe keeps up the quality of the espresso in addition to offering fresh vibes in their cafes, I would love to see them keep opening up more espresso bars in the city. Next up Grand Central towards late Spring.

Maybe at some point an Upper West or Upper East Side location? Something to accompany those spring and summer visits to Central Park?

Semiosis at ChinaSquare in Chelsea

Friday, March 28th, 2008

Winter has been a rough one. I must admit. We’ve still been visiting our favorite cafes each week. But because of the weather the pace has been a bit slower. When it is decent enough we have now started going to the playground as often as possible since my son loves the swings and has started to stand up.

Last week, we were in Chelsea on a clear but cold day. Another visit to Café Grumpy.

And another visit to ChinaSquare New York. This time for their ‘Semiosis’ exhibition of contemporary Chinese artists. This one was smaller than their ‘Revolution’ exhibit. Yet it still had a couple pieces that caught my eye.

Here they are.

Even better to check them out live & in-person.

Zhong Biao - The Sky of Us 8 (2008)

Zhang Xiaotao - Tunnel (2007)

This Week at Bubble New York

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

We spent a couple of days at the Bubble New York trade show in Chelsea this week where some of the coolest and most creative in children’s clothing, toys and accessories from around the globe were on exhibit.

Lots of beautiful stuff. Our children will have some great fashion options in stores in the coming months. The challenging part for parents and gift-buyers will be deciding.

Many designers offered organic and/or sustainability angles to their lines.

Here are a couple of highlights from the show from T design and accessories.

Lea’s Alphabet

Visually rich, Grégoire Ganter’s alphabet portraits match fun and learning in Lea’s Alphabet. He uses photos from his travels to then teach/express the alphabet in a colorful and intriguing set of portraits and collages.

Pooki & Co

These characters, created in France, are a lot of fun. Each stuffed character has its own story and background.

Pooki & Co - Kiko
Poloppo

Cool looking Ts. With sustainability, organic design and some web 2.0 as well. Quite a dynamic concept.

The Ts are designed by children from around the world who submit their work online. Part of the line has already gone organic. And the children receive a portion of the sales.

Bunny & Bee

Both the Bunny & Bee collection for girls and Little Thieves collection for boys have fun and bright designs for our kids. Created by a San Francisco parent team focusing on creating fun & cool graphic designs for kids.

It was a beautiful but frigid day.

A good day to pop in and out of galleries in Chelsea.

And on such a clear day, we had amazing view from First Street Gallery’s 9th floor space.

We enjoyed the Beijing Now exhibit, showing off some more of China’s contemporary talent.

Check the artists’ work out for yourself, even better to see the works in person.

We enjoyed the visit. Some fresh stuff.

Here are some photos. In-person is even better.

Dan Perjovschi at Lombard-Freid Projects in Chelsea

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

We spent the afternoon in Chelsea. And visited the Dan Perjovschi exhibition at the Lombard-Freid Projects gallery.

By request of the gallery, I can not publish Mr. Perjovschi’s actual work. We enjoyed both the gallery and Dan Perjovschi’s work.

Thus, here are some photos touched-up with some SohoKind penguin & bear love.

If you get the chance you should check out Dan Perjovschi’s work in-person.

Top Artisanal Café NYC - Ninth Street Espresso

Friday, January 18th, 2008

Want an amazing espresso? Casual service that is almost so casual it is too cool?

Ninth Street Espresso is then a place to go.

For a laid back café, visit Ninth Street Espresso in the far East Village, where you’ll have a park view, great espresso and a chill café environment.

For a bit more action, visit their espresso bar in the Chelsea Market. Same great espresso. Two very cool scenes on opposite sides of the island.
